Annual Workforce Development Summit

The inagural Energy Careers Discovery offered one-stop information shopping for those who influence the people, policies, and practices of energy workforce. This included: Members of Congress, their staffs, federal agency officials, workforce boards, energy educators, community-based organizations, philanthropic organizations, state and local officials, and others who want to learn about workforce development in the energy sector. The Discovery Zone is not for job seekers, but job influencers!

The CEWD Community Showed Up!

The first ever Discovery Zone was a memorable event. CEWD Members and Partners brought dynamic show-and-tell experiential learning items that made attendees say “WOW” and provided an unforgettable experience about careers in the energy industry.

Attendees were able to experience:

  • A 5 foot turbine blade model
  • Test out cable splicing
  • Sit/ride in various electric vehicles and see a charging model
  • Get their hands on a demonstration of solar energy generation, inverters, battery storage systems, supervisory controls and data acquisition and additional renewable energy technologies
  • Fly a Drone Experience
  • Learn about home energy efficiency pumps/electrical/plumbing/HVAC
  • See a lineworker training demonstration
  • Experience a live natural gas demonstration
  • Understand mechanical insulation through education
  • Experience a nuclear simulator models (software and 3-D printed)
  • Try on overhead Tools of the Trade/
  • Use a PPE hotstick through demonstration
  • See a 3D printer in action
  • Experience multiple safety demonstration
  • See a real life, full-size solar model and a solar 3D printed model
  • Jump into the world of virtual reality

The Discovery Zone is, quite simply, all about discovery.  Participants learned:

WHERE hiring needs are projected and what skill sets and competencies will be required

HOW candidates should prepare for hiring into energy jobs
