My fondest experience in my energy career thus far was my first boiler outage experience. I was just getting up to speed with boiler operation and the waste to energy process when my operations manager came to me with a proposition. My manager told me to crawl through the offline boiler and meet him afterwards and fire away as many questions as I could. I grabbed my respirator, hung my personal LOTO lock, and made my way in and out of every opening of the boiler. From observing the regional mechanics evaluating the superheater tubes for leaks after a hydrostatic test to observing the mechanics doing grate repairs, I compiled a lengthy list of questions for the operations manager. All my questions were answered backed by years of experience and time dedicated to troubleshooting and repairing these boilers. This sparked my interest in learning more about boilers and the waste-to-energy process, so I signed up for a steam engineering class. Looking back on this experience, I am thankful my operations manager challenged me to get out of my comfort zone and explore the unknown. What began as a simple walkthrough quickly evolved into a deeper appreciation of the complexity and teamwork required to keep a waste-to-energy facility running safely and efficiently.
