In September 2017, several months following my retirement, Puerto Rico experienced two devastating hurricanes, Irma and Maria. In view of my experience, I was asked to assemble a team of experts known as the Transformation Advisory Team, to travel to Puerto Rico and provide advice to the Governor for restoring electricity and rebuilding the electric system.
The Hurricanes knocked out power on the entire island for essential services such as clean water, telephones and related telecom. Some consumers were without power for almost a year and more than 4,000 citizens lost their lives. Truly devastating! I was overwhelmed with the challenges but knew I had to try to make a difference and improve the lives of people.
I drew upon my faith, experience, and leadership. I stepped up! As a result of some of my decisions, I was unanimously confirmed by the Puerto Rico Senate to serve on the Board of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Administration (PREPA) which provided electric service at that time to the entire Island. There have been many changes since then including having the grid operated and managed by a concessionaire, Luma. Despite this transition, significant challenges remain with frequent power outages and a poorly maintained grid with outdated infrastructure.
The attached pictures show me, an African American, addressing concerns of the mayors of some of the municipalities and as Vice Chair of PREPA, explaining my views on critical issues to the PREPA Board.
I strongly believe that you can achieve positive outcomes if you draw on your experiences and believe in yourself. I am guided by my faith which provides my inner strength to always remain focused and positive!!!
