In the News: Bipartisan Hearings Begin in the House Committee on Education and Labor to Reauthorize the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act
The House Education and Labor Committee looks to reauthorize the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). The WIOA funds workforce development programs like JobCorp and YouthBuild.
Not only did the coronavirus pandemic cause a sharp increase in unemployment, but the kinds of jobs available have also transformed. Many employers rapidly implemented new technologies throughout the pandemic that demand new skillsets. Millions, especially young people, may struggle to find gainful employment unless proactive measures, like job training programs and reskilling initiatives, are taken.
On May 13th, the Higher Education and Workforce Investment Subcommittee held the first of three committee hearings on the matter.
